Abilene, Texas, once known as the “Future Great Town of West Texas,” can no longer claim this moniker. It began as a tiny railroad stop in 1881, and now thrives as a community of over 117,000 residents, the 25th largest in Texas.
With a combination of resources to support multiple recreational and outdoor activities as well as a host of cultural arts opportunities, Abilene and its surrounding communities of Wylie, Sweetwater and Tuscola has an impressive quality of life factor.
The job force in Abilene is a diverse combination of white and blue-collar workers along with armed forces personnel from nearby Dyess Air Force Base. Abilene’s emphasis on biotechnology, computer science, wind farming and software engineering is a driving force both in the job market and in educational objectives.
Two school districts, Abilene Independent School District and Wylie Independent School District provide an excellent public school education. In 2006, Abilene was ranked the highest in Texas for its public education system and 17th in the nation.
Higher education opportunities are offered by Abilene Christian University, McMurray University and Hardin-Simmons University together with satellite campuses of Cisco Junior College, Texas State Technical College, American Commercial College and Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
Life in Wylie
The community of Wylie, often mistaken for the incorporated city near Dallas, is a family friendly area southwest of Abilene known for its outstanding school district. Founded around 1904, Wylie grew as a suburb of Abilene between 1950 and 1980.
The Wylie school system boasts a "Recognized" status with the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Its elementary schools consistently rate an "Exemplary" status. The district also has the distinction of a “Superior” rating by TEA's Financial Integrity Rating System. In 2008, Wylie High School received the U.S. Department of Education’s No Child Left Behind Blue Ribbon School award for outstanding academic achievement. Wylie High School was one of only four public high schools in Texas and among only 320 schools in the nation to receive this honor.
Homes in Wylie are mostly medium to large single-family homes. Most homes in established neighborhoods were built between 1970 and 1994, but there are a number of residential properties built more recently. The reputation for excellent schools places Wylie real estate at a premium.
